Chat with Nomadic Matt: Advice for Exploring the Globe on $75 Daily

When discussing experienced long-term travelers and bloggers in this domain, our acquaintance Matt Kepnes from [Nomadic Matt](https://www.nomadicmatt.com/) stands as a recognized expert. He’s a leading figure in travel media, and we feel privileged that he has invited us to present at his conferences, conduct webinars for the Nomadic Network community, and contribute articles to his site. We are united in our conviction regarding the life-changing potential of slow travel and that this transformative journey isn’t just for those with extravagant budgets. In reality, traveling economically is a secret tactic that not only conserves funds but frequently results in richer and more authentic experiences… and that, dear friends, is where the true enchantment lies! (*Find out more in our interview with Nomadic Matt, below!*)

To discover how to enjoy a lifetime of incredible travel adventures without spending excessively, Matt’s latest publication, *[How to Travel the World on $75 a Day](https://amzn.to/4iHKpRU)*, is essential reading. The second edition of this *New York Times* bestselling work effectively tackles the significant shifts in the travel industry in recent years and presents an uplifting pathway forward. Filled with pertinent and highly specific guidance, the 368-page book is divided into three main parts: trip planning, on-the-road expenditures, and international travel by region. As we went through it, we found ourselves agreeing wholeheartedly and were also impressed by the ingenious advice and innovative resources it highlighted.

## NOMADIC MATT INTERVIEW

There’s an immense amount to gain from this book and the author! Hence, we are thrilled to present our discussion with Matt Kepnes, covering everything from his journey into the world of travel, the inspiration behind *How to Travel the World on $75 a Day*, to the insights offered in this vital travel manual.

### Before we dive into your latest book, could you share a little about yourself…

During a trip to Thailand in 2005, I was motivated by some backpackers to resign from my job and embark on a year-long journey. I departed in 2006, but instead of returning after a year, I stayed away for 18 months. Upon returning in 2008, I started my blog, [nomadicmatt.com](https://www.nomadicmatt.com/), to secure freelance writing opportunities that would enable me to continue traveling. Partly due to the lack of bloggers sharing how to travel long-term on a budget and the demand for this scarce information, the website gained traction, and one day I woke up to find I had built a career! I’ve been pursuing this for 17 years now.

### What inspired you to revise your previous book and produce *How to Travel the World on $75 a Day*?

The last edition was published in 2017, and since then, significant world changes have occurred due to COVID. The pandemic irrevocably transformed the travel landscape. Numerous businesses shut down, previous cost-saving strategies became outdated, new approaches emerged, new companies were founded, various destinations shifted, and, understandably, prices have increased significantly.

Given these dramatic changes in travel, I aimed for my book to mirror the current realities people encounter while planning trips, saving money, and exploring regions worldwide. The tactics for smart budget traveling have evolved considerably since 2017, so I wanted to ensure everyone had current information on how to navigate it well!

### What are some of the thrilling updates in the new edition?

In *How to Travel the World on $75 a Day*, you will discover a wealth of new content. I ended up revising approximately 80% of this book due to the extensive changes in travel. Initially, I anticipated a straightforward update, but it evolved into a substantial rewrite! Key updates include:

– A new section on earning and using points and miles
– A completely refreshed resource section featuring companies and accommodations I adore
– Enhanced information on overtourism and responsible travel practices
– Fully revised, updated, and broadened destination sections with current prices, savings strategies, dining suggestions, accommodations, transportation, and activities
– New tips and tricks for saving money prior to departure
– Innovative ways to afford accommodations, including options for complimentary stays
– Updated strategies for transportation savings, along with new insights into transit passes

### I imagine many individuals get hung up on the $75 figure…

They do – and they occupy both extremes! Some believe that amount is too high because they consider themselves “true travelers” who can manage with less (there are always those who want to demonstrate their superiority in travel), while others think that the figure does not seem like
