All-Inclusive Handbook for Participating in STLV: Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas

STLV Trek to Vegas stands as the largest Star Trek Convention in most years. This extensive event spans 5 days in Las Vegas and is an essential destination for any sci-fi enthusiast (and definitely Trekkie). The vastness of STLV, coupled with a trip to Las Vegas, involves a multitude of elements that can complicate understanding what one actually participates in at a Star Trek convention.

You can view the video above for your comprehensive guide to STLV and continue reading for the key highlights.

What Is STLV?

STLV represents one of the numerous fan conventions organized by Creation Entertainment. While it’s not solely dedicated to Star Trek (STLV features guests and panels from various fandoms), the primary focus remains on the series created by Gene Roddenberry. STLV occurs every year in early August, running from Wednesday to Sunday at the Rio Hotel and Casino, which has recently come under the ownership of Hyatt.

Planning Your STLV

The initial step is to register for a World of Hyatt rewards program account if you do not already possess one. You can accumulate and utilize Hyatt points for reservations at the Rio, though accumulating points post-stay is not permitted (in contrast to most airline mileage programs). It’s advisable to book a room at the Rio – located off the strip, which makes it less convenient than other properties – by mid-May at the latest to ensure accommodation that meets your requirements.

Upon arriving at the hotel, you can enroll in a Rio Rewards card. This will enable you to earn points on any purchases made at the hotel (excluding room costs), and Rio will send you free stay offers throughout the year. With a Rio Rewards promotion, you may often secure at least one night of your booking before or after the convention at no extra cost.

STLV tickets are available for purchase as general admission or through various tiers, each offering distinct perks. For general admission, the busiest days tend to be Saturday and Sunday, so I recommend securing tickets at least a month prior. Throughout the year, around numerous U.S. Federal Holidays, Creation also has ticket sales. You can subscribe on their website to receive notifications about any promotions.

Personally, I prefer to arrive at Rio the Sunday before STLV, organize a few side trips, such as to Area 51, and depart the Tuesday following the convention. (An unofficial Star Trek pool party occurs on the Monday after STLV, which aids in recuperating after the lengthy weekend.)

What’s STLV Like?

STLV resembles a Star Trek buffet, allowing you to select how you wish to fill your plate. There are panel discussions featuring actors, crew, and writers answering audience questions, a crowded vendor’s area rich with merchandise, science presentations, concerts, and more, all often happening simultaneously. You’ll need to make choices between the various events and any scheduled photo opportunities or autograph signings.

Photo ops are enjoyable, but for deeper interaction with a specific Trek personality, obtaining an autograph is preferable. You will pay for the autograph, but many will happily take a selfie with you at no extra charge. Additionally, you’ll have a few extra moments to converse with the Trek actor, writer, or crew member.

Money-Saving Tips

Having an additional day before STLV allows you to visit a nearby grocery store to purchase snacks and any desired alcohol. The Rio, akin to most Las Vegas resorts, imposes high markups on food and drinks, so shopping at a local grocery store can save you hundreds during STLV. I would also advise bringing or acquiring a filtered water bottle for drinking from the room faucet. While the convention venues provide free water, having a bottle will minimize waste.

No Cosplay Needed

Dressing up isn’t necessary, but if you choose to, the level of creativity is limitless. At STLV, you can portray a different character each day, but do ensure to wear comfortable walking shoes. The long corridors of the Rio can be quite extensive, and don’t forget to visit the Masquerade Bar in the evenings, where a majority of attendees pass through at some point to relax.

For any Star Trek fan, attending STLV at least once is a must. Creation also organizes other regional ST-Conventions in various U.S. cities worth exploring, but for the largest gathering featuring the best show, there’s truly no place quite like STLV Trek to Vegas.
