The reasoning behind this adjustment appears to be twofold. First, JAL likely intends to increase engagement in its own frequent flyer program, possibly at the detriment of partner programs. Second, this action might be intended to benefit Japanese customers, as international travelers tend to be aligned with different frequent flyer programs. Nevertheless, anyone can enroll in the JAL Mileage Bank, meaning the change does not completely exclude non-Japanese passengers.
While some may perceive this policy change as a restriction, JAL’s domestic premium cabins continue to be attractively priced, presenting an enticing travel experience. As the airline enacts this alteration, travelers will need to contemplate joining the Mileage Bank program to keep enjoying the advantages of last-minute upgrades on domestic flights.
