Southwest Airlines and Turkish Airlines Reveal New Interline Collaboration

Southwest Airlines is presently in the midst of a considerable evolution, characterized by several strategic modifications. The carrier, formerly recognized for its no-frills philosophy, is now implementing checked bag charges and providing assigned seating as well as extra legroom options. In addition to these updates, Southwest is actively seeking airline collaborations to broaden its international presence.

Earlier this year, Southwest initiated its inaugural partnership with Icelandair, with aspirations to eventually operate flights to Iceland. Subsequently, the airline disclosed partnerships with China Airlines, EVA Air, Philippine Airlines, and Condor. Most recently, Southwest announced its sixth partner, Turkish Airlines, underscoring the swift progression of these initiatives.

The new alliance with Turkish Airlines entails an interline agreement, slated to begin in early 2026. This accord enables passengers to purchase tickets that incorporate flights on both Southwest and Turkish Airlines, initially accessible at 10 U.S. airports serviced by both airlines. Turkish Airlines, a participant in the Star Alliance, is celebrated for operating to more destinations than any other airline and has ambitious expansion objectives.

Southwest’s Chief Operating Officer, Andrew Watterson, highlighted the common principles of hospitality and dependability shared by the two airlines. Nevertheless, this partnership is confined to an interline agreement, the simplest form of airline collaboration. Currently, there are no intentions for a codeshare agreement or loyalty program partnership.

Southwest’s approach toward partnerships seems concentrated on establishing interline agreements, with no imminent plans for deeper collaboration. Although the initial partnership with Icelandair suggested the possibility of future alliances, later partnerships have stayed at the interline level.

As Southwest continues to investigate partnerships, the airline’s strategy remains prudent, concentrating on fundamental agreements that enable ticket purchasing across various carriers. While these advancements are significant, they constitute a modest progression in Southwest’s overarching transformation plan.
