The Controversial Divide Between Sonder and Marriott Hotels

In 2024, Marriott Hotels revealed a collaboration with Sonder, rebranding the apartment rental service as Sonder by Marriott Bonvoy. However, in November 2025, Marriott unexpectedly ended the partnership, mandating that all guests leave Sonder locations immediately. The aftermath was rapid, with guests discovering their possessions in plastic bags in the corridors. The termination stemmed from Sonder’s inability to fulfill financial commitments, culminating in their bankruptcy application within 48 hours.

Sonder’s CEO, Janice Sears, blamed their Chapter 7 filing on difficulties with integration alongside Marriott, unforeseen expenses, and a drop in revenue from Marriott’s Bonvoy program. Regardless of the blame-shifting, it seems Sonder was already experiencing financial difficulties and could not maintain operations until the expected revenue increase from Marriott occurred.

With Sonder applying for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the company is on the path to liquidation, canceling all upcoming bookings. Customers looking for refunds must coordinate with their banks for chargebacks, while Marriott aids those who reserved through their site. The dissolution signifies the closure of Sonder’s roomy, apartment-style lodgings, leaving travelers with fewer options than conventional hotel rooms.
