Lufthansa, a prominent airline globally, is celebrating its centennial amidst a considerable hurdle as its pilots get ready to strike. The strike, initiated by Vereinigung Cockpit (VC), the union that advocates for Lufthansa pilots, is scheduled to occur from 12:01 AM on Thursday, March 12, 2026, until 11:59 PM on Friday, March 13, 2026. Pilots from Lufthansa CityLine will participate in the strike for one day, on March 12, 2026. This industrial action is projected to result in significant disruptions, impacting flights departing from Germany, except for those to and from the Middle East, which are considered vital.
The strike arises from ongoing disputes concerning the company pension plan and collective bargaining talks. Prior to 2017, Lufthansa pilots enjoyed a conventional pension with guaranteed payouts, which has since been substituted with a less advantageous capital market-driven model. VC President Andreas Pinheiro has conveyed frustration over the absence of meaningful enhancements to the pension plan. Furthermore, pilots from Lufthansa CityLine are pursuing a new wage agreement, as discussions that began in August 2025 have not produced a satisfactory offer.
The airline has released a travel advisory, permitting passengers to rebook their flights and recommending that they verify flight statuses due to possible cancellations. The union stresses that the strike is a final measure and calls on management to provide a negotiable proposal to prevent the industrial action. As Lufthansa commemorates its 100 years, the strike underscores the persistent labor issues within the aviation sector.
