Lufthansa Group is allegedly poised to unveil modifications to its fare framework, adding new basic or “light” fare packages for premium cabins, encompassing business class and premium economy. This alteration, anticipated to be disclosed on March 17, 2026, will be applicable across Lufthansa Group carriers, including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, and Brussels Airlines. Although basic fare choices have existed in economy class for a while, their application in premium cabins marks a novel shift.

The new basic business class fares will permit only one checked bag as opposed to two, implement a seat reservation cost ranging from €80 to €120, and impose a heightened change fee. Likewise, basic premium economy fares will also feature one checked bag and a seat reservation charge, along with elevated change fees. Initially, these modifications will be rolled out on select routes connecting to and from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Central America, and South America, while North America and certain Asian destinations will be excluded for the time being.

A notable feature of these new fares is the restriction on elite benefits. Star Alliance Gold members will continue to benefit from an additional baggage allowance; however, no elite members, including the top-tier Miles & More HON Circle members, will get complimentary seat assignments on basic fares.

Despite the potentially adverse perception of these changes, Lufthansa will maintain lounge access for basic fares, which is a favorable aspect compared to other airlines. However, the launch of basic business class fares is consistent with trends noticed in other airlines, such as Delta, and may eventually be adopted by Lufthansa’s joint venture allies like Air Canada and United.

In summary, the introduction of “light” fares in premium cabins by Lufthansa Group signifies a wider industry movement toward unbundling services, and while it might not be embraced by every customer, it constitutes a strategic effort to provide more pricing alternatives.
