British Airways to Implement Complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi Throughout Entire Fleet, Beginning with 787 Planes
In November 2025, International Airlines Group (IAG) revealed intentions to implement complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi across its airline brands, including British Airways. Initially, details regarding the timeline were scarce, but there’s encouraging news now, as the first aircraft has already commenced operations with Starlink.

British Airways is collaborating with SpaceX to roll out Starlink Wi-Fi across its entire fleet, covering both long-haul and short-haul flights. The best part is that British Airways is providing Starlink Wi-Fi at no cost to all its passengers. This system supports connections from multiple devices, such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

British Airways states that no specialized log-in is necessary to access the service. This implies that joining the British Airways Club loyalty program is not a prerequisite, which stands in contrast to the prevailing industry trend.

Starlink is recognized for delivering high-speed, low-latency broadband internet, and the service is available gate to gate. Starlink Wi-Fi facilitates live streaming, productivity comparable to ground-level services (with swift upload and download speeds), gaming, e-commerce, and more.

Starlink’s popularity among airlines is on the rise. To date, carriers including airBaltic, Air France, Air New Zealand, Emirates, Gulf Air, Hawaiian Airlines, Iberia, Korean Air, Lufthansa Group, Qatar Airways, SAS, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, and WestJet have all disclosed plans to implement the service. A notable advantage of Starlink is its relatively quick installation process once aircraft are certified for it.

Here’s how British Airways CEO Sean Doyle characterizes this milestone:

“We are dedicated to enhancing our customer experience. Launching Starlink on our long-haul and short-haul aircraft is a transformative step for us and our customers, enhancing their in-flight experience by providing seamless connectivity from gate to gate. Particularly for short-haul flights, this will set us apart from our rivals.”

“With our new Starlink-powered Wi-Fi, our customers will be able to enjoy exceptionally fast, low-latency internet from the moment they board until they land—even over oceans and remote areas. It’s Wi-Fi that feels like home, even at 38,000 feet.”

Prior to Starlink, British Airways had already made considerable progress with Wi-Fi, as nearly its entire fleet was equipped with it at an additional cost. However, Starlink not only surpasses in speed but is also offered free of charge.

British Airways’ Starlink Wi-Fi implementation plan

When British Airways initially announced its plans for Starlink, the airline only mentioned that installations would commence in 2026, lacking further information. There’s now an encouraging update, as British Airways has confirmed that its first aircraft has been outfitted with Starlink. Specifically, it’s a Boeing 787-8 with the registration code G-ZBJJ.

This likely indicates that the Boeing 787-8 fleet will be the first to benefit from Starlink, which is convenient since these were among the last aircraft without Wi-Fi. It’s anticipated that the remaining 787-8s will receive this service in the upcoming weeks, and it will be interesting to see which fleet type follows.

Starlink Wi-Fi can be deployed rather swiftly once the certification on a specific aircraft is obtained; however, British Airways has a sizable fleet of over 250 aircraft, so this process may take some time.

Bottom line

British Airways is set to provide free Starlink Wi-Fi, with installations currently in progress. Unlike other airlines, British Airways does not require passengers to be part of the loyalty program to access the service.

It’s impressive to witness the rapid pace at which airlines are adopting Starlink Wi-Fi. However, patience is essential, as it may take a couple of years (or even longer) for the entire fleet to be equipped with this service.
