United Airlines has recently revealed a range of improvements to the passenger experience, highlighting the addition of new aircraft and upgraded services. The airline is set to acquire Airbus A321XLRs, which will be utilized on long-haul international routes, mainly to Europe and South America. Alongside this, United is also planning to launch a subfleet of Airbus A321neos for premium transcontinental flights, branded as “Coastliners.”

The Coastliner A321neos will showcase a new livery that embodies the coastal destinations they service. These aircraft will have a total of 161 seats, comprising 20 Polaris business class seats arranged in a 1-1 configuration, 12 Premium Plus seats in a 2-2 configuration, and 129 economy class seats in a 3-3 configuration. This layout is intended to provide a premium experience on transcontinental routes, with enhanced comfort and amenities.

United aims to acquire over 175 A321neos, with 50 of them designated as Coastliners. The inaugural flight of these planes is anticipated to commence by summer, with 40 aircraft delivered by early 2028. The Coastliners will take over from older Boeing 757-200s and some wide-body aircraft currently deployed on transcontinental routes, enabling United to broaden its long-haul network.

In addition to the new aircraft, United will provide Polaris Lounge access to passengers flying in business class on Coastliner flights. This signifies a noteworthy change, as United previously did not grant access to its premium lounges for transcontinental flights, in contrast to competitors American Airlines and Delta Air Lines.

United’s approach differs from that of American Airlines, which plans to deploy its Airbus A321XLRs for both domestic and international routes, potentially constraining its growth in the premium transcontinental sector. Delta Air Lines is also planning a subfleet of A321neos with flat beds for transcontinental journeys, but has encountered difficulties with cabin certification.
