AirAsia, the Malaysian ultra-low-cost airline, has implemented a major change in its fleet strategy by making a historic order for 150 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. This order signifies the largest individual commitment for the A220, propelling the program past the 1,000 firm order benchmark. Deliveries are anticipated to commence in 2028.
AirAsia will serve as the initial customer for the high-density version of the A220-300, which has the capacity to hold up to 160 passengers thanks to an added overwing exit. This variant is distinct from the A220-500 stretch model that Airbus is exploring.
The A220 is projected to be vital in AirAsia’s network, especially throughout ASEAN and into Central Asia, enabling the deployment of larger aircraft on extended routes. AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes underscored the strategic aspect of this choice, emphasizing the airline’s goal to forge a genuine low-cost network carrier.
At present, AirAsia’s fleet mainly features Airbus A320-family aircraft, including the A321neo, A321LR, and A321XLR models. The advent of the A220s will likely phase out some older A320s, with a capacity of 160 seats as opposed to the A320’s 180 seats. Nonetheless, the A220’s operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness render it a compelling option.
This initiative represents a considerable triumph for Airbus, as the A220 has not seen broad adoption by ultra-low-cost carriers until now. AirAsia’s choice highlights the aircraft’s potential in this market sector, providing reduced costs per frame and operational efficiencies.
