Air New Zealand Unveils $495 Economy Bunk Beds on 787 Planes
Air New Zealand is poised to transform economy class travel with the launch of bunk beds, named Skynest, on its Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This innovative idea, initially revealed in 2022, will showcase six full-length lie-flat sleep pods positioned in a “V” formation, providing three tiers of bunk beds. Each bed measures 80 inches in length and 23 inches in width, featuring bedding, privacy curtains, and conveniences such as a USB outlet and reading light.

The Skynests will be situated between the premium economy and economy sections, utilizing the area of six economy seats. Set to be available for flights commencing December 2026, the Skynest will first be introduced on the Auckland to New York route. Travelers will have the option to book these bunks for four-hour intervals, starting at $495, with a 30-minute cleaning and prep time between sessions.

This advancement enhances Air New Zealand’s current Skycouch offering, which converts a row of economy seats into a couch. The Skynest provides a more spacious and comfortable option for travelers wishing to rest during long-haul journeys. In spite of delays related to Boeing 787 delivery challenges, the Skynest assures a distinctive economy experience, with possible plans to retrofit current 787s in the future.
