Saudi Arabia's Visionary Initiative The Line Paused for Reality Assessment
Saudi Arabia has initiated a bold endeavor to reshape its economy by making substantial investments in tourism and reducing its reliance on oil. At the heart of this initiative is the NEOM project, with The Line representing its most daring element. Designed as a 170-kilometer linear metropolis, The Line seeks to accommodate nine million inhabitants in a cutting-edge setting free from cars and streets, utilizing artificial intelligence and sustainable innovations.

However, despite this grand ambition, The Line has faced considerable obstacles. Originally slated for completion by 2030, the project has experienced budget overruns and construction challenges, resulting in a significant contraction of its scope. Reports suggest that by 2030, only a small portion of the expected length and population will be realized, with construction currently paused until after 2030.

The halt of The Line brings to light concerns regarding the viability of such expansive projects and the wider effects on Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030. The nation’s Public Investment Fund, which supports these initiatives, is now focusing on infrastructure investments rather than the advancement of The Line.

The prospects for The Line are unclear, as the initiative may need to be redesigned for simplicity and cost reduction. This delay also influences other NEOM projects, such as Trojena, which is planned to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games. The economic and sustainability dimensions of these initiatives are being closely examined, in light of the scaled-back plans and possible financial repercussions.

Saudi Arabia’s tourism aspirations, including the introduction of Riyadh Air and various hotel developments, continue to draw international interest. The fate of The Line is poised to reflect the success of the country’s wider economic diversification strategies. Whether The Line will ultimately come to fruition or remain an ambitious vision is yet to be determined.
