Qatar Airways has undergone a significant management overhaul in recent years, witnessing three CEOs in as many years. The airline’s long-serving CEO, Akbar Al Baker, who held the position for 27 years, unexpectedly stepped down in late 2023. He was followed by Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, the previous COO of Doha Hamad International Airport, who was credited with boosting employee morale and had a positive reputation. However, Al-Meer also left after a two-year tenure, with Hamad Al-Khater taking over as the new CEO, another former COO of the airport.
Al-Khater’s appointment sparked concerns due to his minimal airline experience and limited public visibility. He recently made his first major public appearance at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Rio de Janeiro, where he conversed with Richard Quest. Quest posed challenging questions regarding the frequent changes in leadership and Al-Khater’s expertise. Al-Khater highlighted the importance of consistent leadership and the airline’s dedication to achieving excellence globally.
Although his public visibility has been sparse, Al-Khater came across as articulate and self-assured during the interview. Nonetheless, his answers were perceived as overly broad, offering little in the way of specific insights into his strategic vision for the airline. The interview shed some light on Al-Khater’s position, yet uncertainties linger concerning the rationale behind the swift CEO turnover and the future trajectory of Qatar Airways.
