In early 2023, Qantas revealed intentions to broaden its collection of first-class lounges by inaugurating a new venue in London. This declaration was a component of a more extensive investment in the airline’s lounge network, generating considerable enthusiasm among travelers. Qantas already manages a well-respected lounge at London Heathrow, shared by premium passengers, including those in first and business class, as well as oneworld Emerald and Sapphire members. The upcoming lounge was designed to deliver a more exclusive experience for oneworld first-class travelers and Emerald members.
The proposed Qantas First Lounge at Heathrow was meant to be a distinct area, significantly increasing the airline’s lounge capacity at the airport. It would have marked the fifth exclusive Qantas First Lounge, adding to existing locations in Sydney, Melbourne, Los Angeles, and Singapore. This investment was to coincide with the rollout of “Project Sunrise” flights, featuring direct service between Sydney and London, along with an entirely new first-class suite on the aircraft.
However, recent updates indicate that Qantas has abandoned the plans for the new lounge due to the inability to obtain sufficient space within the terminal. Despite years of attempts, the airline could not find an appropriate location. This situation has led to criticism of Qantas for creating excitement without solid plans established.
In place of the new lounge, Qantas will implement modifications to its current Heathrow lounge. While the physical space won’t be enlarged, the lounge will be remodeled to increase capacity and improve the experience. This will include adding 40 to 60 seats by reducing the size of the downstairs bar and staircase. Furthermore, a new dining area will be introduced with access requirements similar to those of a Qantas First Lounge, available to oneworld first-class travelers and Emerald members.
These modifications are anticipated to be finalized by late 2027, coinciding with the launch of Project Sunrise flights. Although the cancellation of the new lounge is disappointing, the improvements to the existing facility provide some relief to travelers.
