Marriott Transitions from Pepsi to Coke
Since 1992, Marriott has maintained an exclusive deal with Pepsi to supply soft drinks across its properties worldwide. This arrangement wasn’t created due to customer preference for Pepsi, but rather because Pepsi offered Marriott a more favorable agreement. Specifically, Coca-Cola was not prepared to provide Marriott with a loan at that time, which was critical for Marriott.
This is set to change, as Marriott will be transitioning to Coke for their products on a global scale, encompassing guest rooms, restaurants, lounges, and meeting events. The phased rollout commences today and is expected to be implemented at properties worldwide over the coming months. This includes carbonated soft drinks as well as an expanding selection of hydration and functional beverages.
It’s amusing because I distinctly remember when Marriott acquired Starwood, and then Starwood transitioned from Coke to Pepsi, which many of us were not thrilled about.
Here’s a statement from Marriott CEO Anthony Capuano regarding this change:
“This agreement unites two iconic brands that share a dedication to quality, consistency, and crafting unforgettable experiences. We are committed to providing the products our guests and Marriott Bonvoy Members cherish, better aligning with guest preferences, and generating economic advantages for owners and franchise operators within our system. We’re thrilled to collaborate with The Coca‑Cola Company to offer their exceptional products in more locations.”
In addition, here’s a comment from Coca-Cola CEO Henrique Braun:
“This is a fantastic day. On behalf of the entire Coca-Cola system, we’re looking forward to our future with Marriott and the chance to offer travelers more of the brands they love. From sparkling beverages to juices, hydration, and dairy, we’re providing guests with options to meet their beverage needs throughout their stay.”
I’m Interested in What Prompted This Switch from Pepsi to Coke
Marriott has not officially disclosed the reason behind its shift from Pepsi to Coke. Did Marriott realize that solely having Pepsi products adversely affected the guest experience, or was Coke finally prepared to present Marriott with a more attractive deal?
In an email to hotel owners regarding the change, Marriott indicated that over 70% of Bonvoy members prefer Coke over Pepsi, which is why the transition is occurring. Therefore, I believe guest preference plays a significant role in this decision, and perhaps Marriott could secure a slightly improved deal from Coke than in the past.
Personally, I’m pleased to witness this change. There are certainly more individuals who favor Coke over Pepsi; it’s just uncommon to see Marriott genuinely concerned about customer preferences (instead of what they might accept). 😉
Final Thoughts
Marriott is transitioning from Pepsi to Coke, after 34 years of exclusive partnership with the number two beverage company. Marriott asserts that over 70% of Bonvoy members prefer Coke to Pepsi, which seems accurate. Although there was clearly some tension between the two brands in the past, I believe most guests will welcome this change.
The rollout is set to begin immediately (in July 2026), and these beverages should be available at properties globally in the upcoming months.
What are your thoughts on Marriott’s switch from Pepsi to Coke?
