American Airlines Launches New Route from Chicago to Tokyo Narita
American Airlines has revealed the reintroduction of its daily direct flights between Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) commencing on March 27, 2027. This signifies American’s comeback to Asian flights from Chicago, a path that was last traveled until early 2020. The service will employ Boeing 787-9 aircraft, featuring 305 seats across business, premium economy, and economy classes.

The choice to restart this route is in line with American’s strategy to rival United Airlines in the Chicago market, where United has captured considerable market share. Although American currently offers service to Tokyo Narita from Dallas and connects multiple U.S. cities to Tokyo Haneda, this initiative is perceived as a way to reinforce its footprint in Asia from Chicago.

In spite of the enthusiasm surrounding new long-haul services, some regard this route as lackluster since it replicates the current service supplied by joint venture partner Japan Airlines, which already offers flights from both Tokyo Narita and Haneda to Chicago. This overlap prompts inquiries about the additional benefits for passengers, although it does create more choices for utilizing miles and applying upgrades.

In summary, while the revival of the Chicago to Tokyo Narita route is a favorable advancement, there is a wish for American Airlines to broaden its long-haul network beyond joint venture hubs and investigate new destinations.
