Southwest Airlines to Start Earlier Boarding on Majority of Flights Because of Checked Bag Fees

As of August 1, 2026, Southwest Airlines will modify its boarding procedures by commencing the boarding of most flights up to 35 minutes prior to departure, as opposed to the former 30 minutes. This change primarily impacts Boeing 737-800s and 737 MAX 8s on domestic flights, excluding Hawaii, which will now have an earlier boarding time. The decision is made in light of the introduction of checked bag fees, prompting an increase in passengers opting to bring more carry-on luggage to evade these charges. This shift is intended to optimize the boarding process, as the increased carry-ons have been causing holdups. Nonetheless, Southwest continues to uphold shorter boarding intervals than other major US airlines.
