Our month-long journey through Idaho exposed a state brimming with hidden treasures, eager to be discovered.
**Teton Valley: A Breath of Invigoration**
Entering Idaho from Jackson, Wyoming, Teton Valley provides a peaceful getaway with its striking mountain ranges and national forests. In contrast to the lively Jackson Hole, Teton Valley is a serene sanctuary. Our stay at Linn Canyon Ranch, a family-operated venue with roots tracing back to 1906, coincided with a VanLife Gathering, enabling us to bond with fellow travelers and relish the ranch’s glamping tents.
**City of Rocks & Castle Rocks: A Dream for Climbers**
The City of Rocks National Reserve is a geological marvel featuring granitic spires and pinnacles. Rich in history, it served as a significant waystation on the California Trail during the Gold Rush. Castle Rocks State Park, sharing a ranger station with City of Rocks, presents over 700 rock climbing routes and a vibrant bird population. We partook in a ranger-led climbing excursion and stayed in the park’s inaugural glamping facility, the Willow Yurt.
**Shoshone Falls: The West’s Niagara**
Shoshone Falls, which surpasses Niagara Falls in height, is an awe-inspiring sight. The waterfall, cascading 212 feet down tier after tier into the Snake River, creates misty rainbows across the gorge. It stands as a dynamic and magnificent natural spectacle.
**Craters of the Moon National Monument: A Volcanic Marvel**
This extraordinary landscape, blanketed in basaltic lava from an eruption 2,000 years back, showcases nature’s might. The park features lava tubes, cinder buttes, and spatter cones, forming a distinctive ecosystem. We ventured through the Devil’s Orchard, Big Cinder Butte, and the Caves Trail, admiring the wildflowers flourishing in the volcanic soil.
**Land of the Yankee Fork: A Voyage Through Gold Country**
Land of the Yankee Fork State Park provides a peek into Idaho’s gold mining legacy. We explored the abandoned towns of Bonanza and Custer, where the restored buildings from the 1870s and mining artifacts recount tales of yesteryear. The park’s museum and rangers impart knowledge about the area’s rich heritage.
**Rafting the Middle Fork of the Salmon: An Extraordinary Journey**
The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is a globally acclaimed rafting locale. Nestled in the Frank Church Wilderness, it boasts 100 miles of rapids and pristine forest. We embarked on a guided trip with Solitude River Trips, relishing gourmet meals, fly fishing, and the area’s cultural depth.
**Kirkham Hot Springs: Nature’s Retreat**
Idaho’s wealth of hot springs features the charming Kirkham Hot Springs. Situated along the Ponderosa Pine Scenic Byway, the springs offer warm waterfalls and pools with views of the Payette River. It’s an ideal location for unwinding and recharging.
**Boise: A City Full of Character**
As Idaho’s capital, Boise melds urban amenities with small-town warmth. We navigated the city on complimentary bicycles from The Modern Hotel, tracing the Boise River Greenbelt. A walking tour with Preservation Idaho uncovered the city’s rich past, from Basque settlers to early trading posts.
**Snake River Wine Country: An Emerging Region**
The Snake River Valley is a burgeoning wine-producing area with over 50 vineyards. We toured Ste. Chappelle and Bitner Vineyards, savoring delightful wines and spectacular views. The region’s AVA designation in 2007 has catalyzed its development and recognition.
**Hells Canyon: The Deepest River Gorge in North America**
Hells Canyon, sculpted by the Snake River, presents a striking landscape of steep cliffs and tumultuous rapids. We explored the canyon with Hells Canyon Adventures, traversing the river in oar boats and jet boats for an exhilarating experience.
