American Airlines is poised to scrap its “premium” first class services on its Boeing 777-300ER and Airbus A321T planes. The discontinuation of the 777-300ER first class will take effect for flights beginning November 19, 2026, with the A321T first class following suit on March 28, 2027. This move has been on the horizon since 2022 when American debuted its new business class seating. Initially, the elimination was scheduled for late 2024, but it has been delayed.
American remains the sole US carrier with a genuine first class offering, separate from its business class. The choice to uphold first class was made ahead of the merger between American and US Airways, yet current leadership has expressed skepticism regarding its worth. The first class experience has faced criticism for being subpar, showing minimal distinction from business class and inconsistent service.
The removal process will occur in two phases: first, halting the sale of first class tickets and incorporating existing first class cabins into business class, followed by reconfiguring aircraft to eliminate first class seats entirely. By late 2027, it is anticipated that all first class seating will be removed.
In spite of the removal of first class, American intends to upgrade its business class offerings. The Flagship First Dining facilities will be revamped into Flagship Dining, providing a la carte options for business class travelers. This adjustment aims to enhance the overall customer experience, both in-flight and on the ground.
