New York City is one of those destinations that can be a bit daunting before you get there. It comprises five boroughs, numerous neighborhoods, a multitude of hotels, and an infinite array of things to experience.
So, where exactly should you settle in New York City?
Having explored New York a number of times ourselves, our suggestion for newcomers is quite straightforward: **stay in Manhattan**.
Certainly, you can occasionally discover more affordable lodging further out, and both Brooklyn and Queens boast some remarkable neighborhoods of their own.
However, if this is your inaugural visit to NYC and your objective is to experience as much of the city as possible, Manhattan places you directly in the heart of the excitement.
Within Manhattan, **Midtown is among the premier areas to establish your base**.
Nick and I have consistently chosen this neighborhood during our visits to New York. We enjoy stepping out of our hotel and immediately feeling like we’re in the New York portrayed in movies throughout our lives!
Picture towering skyscrapers, yellow taxis, steaming street grates, delis, Broadway theaters, rooftop bars, and some of the most iconic landmarks on Earth.
In this guide, I’ll outline the three best New York City boroughs for first-time travelers, where to stay in each one, and explain why Midtown Manhattan is our top recommendation.
## Quick Answer: Where Should First-Time Travelers Stay in New York?
If you’re organizing your first adventure to New York and want to keep it simple, **select Manhattan – ideally around Midtown**.
You’ll be within walking distance of all the key attractions and have convenient subway access to Lower Manhattan, Central Park, Brooklyn, and nearly anywhere else you wish to explore.
Our three top boroughs for first-time visitors are:
1. **Manhattan:** Best overall and ideal for sightseeing
2. **Brooklyn:** Best for ambience, dining, and a more local vibe
3. **Queens:** Best for cuisine, authentic experiences, and often more affordable lodging
Here’s a more detailed look at each borough.
## 1. Manhattan: Best Overall Area for First-Time Visitors
If you haven’t visited New York before, this is where I’d recommend staying. Manhattan is home to all the attractions that are probably on your NYC must-see list.
Times Square, Central Park, Fifth Avenue, The Empire State Building, Broadway, Rockefeller Center, Wall Street, The High Line, Freedom Tower, and Chelsea Market.
The list continues!
One of the aspects we appreciated about staying in Manhattan was how much we could walk and explore.
New York is a very pedestrian-friendly city, and strolling between sights is all part of the adventure. You’ll find charming cafes, historic buildings, quaint parks, restaurants, shops, street entertainers, and vistas that you would’ve completely missed if underground on the subway.
During past trips, Nick and I have traversed a significant part of Manhattan this way.
We’ve wandered around Battery Park and gazed toward the Statue of Liberty before navigating through Lower Manhattan.
We’ve passed by the Charging Bull, Trinity Church and Wall Street, discovered Chinatown and Little Italy, walked through SoHo and Tribeca, and paid a visit to the 9/11 Memorial.
And that’s just downtown.
Further north, we’ve explored Fifth Avenue, Central Park, Columbus Circle, Chelsea Market, the High Line, Madison Square Garden and, of course, Times Square.
For a first visit (whether for a day, [a weekend](https://www.goatsontheroad.com/weekend-in-new-york/), or a week…), Manhattan simply makes experiencing all of this more manageable.
### Midtown Manhattan: Our Top Choice
Manhattan itself is vast, so determining which section of the borough to stay in is crucial. If your focus is sightseeing, I believe **Midtown Manhattan is one of the top areas to reside in New York City**.
This positioning places you in the heart of many attractions first-time travelers desire to experience.
The Empire State Building, Bryant Park, Grand Central Terminal, New York Public Library, Fifth Avenue, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and Broadway are all located in or around Midtown.
You’re also conveniently situated between Lower Manhattan and Central Park, facilitating exploration in either direction.
This is particularly vital on a brief trip to NYC.
After all that walking, you’ll likely feel a bit fatigued, so having a centrally located hotel allows you to return to your room, refresh for dinner, drop off purchased items, or simply rest your feet for a bit without journeying across the city.
