Lufthansa to Introduce Services to Columbus, Ohio, Backed by $46.9 Million Revenue Assurance Initiative
Columbus, Ohio, is set to obtain its inaugural transatlantic flight service, as Lufthansa aims to initiate nonstop flights between Frankfurt and Columbus beginning May 5, 2027. This new route will operate three times weekly on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Departures from Frankfurt will occur at 11:15 AM, arriving in Columbus at 2:00 PM, while return flights will leave Columbus at 4:20 PM, landing in Frankfurt at 6:15 AM the next day. The 4,248-mile journey will be operated by a Boeing 787-9, equipped with 28 business class seats, 28 premium economy seats, and 231 economy seats.

This advancement represents a crucial milestone for Columbus, which currently provides international flights solely to Toronto, Montreal, and Cancun. The launch of this route is part of a wider $46.9 million airline incentive program spearheaded by JobsOhio, designed to improve air service throughout the state. The program offers revenue guarantees aimed at minimizing financial risks for airlines introducing new routes.

Dirk Janzen, VP of Lufthansa Passenger Sales for the Americas, shared his excitement about linking Columbus with Lufthansa’s Frankfurt hub, underscoring the convenience it brings to both business and leisure travelers. Daren Griffin, President of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, highlighted the route’s capacity to enhance Ohio’s connectivity and foster economic development.

The initiative highlights the strategic significance of the Columbus area, which is home to 38 German-based companies, making Lufthansa a suitable candidate for this project. While the route’s success relies on the considerable incentives offered, its sustainability beyond these incentives will serve as a true indication of its feasibility. Tickets for the new service will be available starting October 20, 2026.
