Air Canada is experiencing considerable modifications in its fleet mix, significantly affecting its low-cost subsidiary, Rouge. Rouge, which has been managing a fleet of 36 Airbus A320-family jets, is shifting to an exclusive Boeing 737 MAX fleet. Air Canada presently has 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, intending to allocate all of them to Rouge before the year’s end, thus expediting the initial schedule from 2028 to 2026.

This transition is propelled by the 737 MAX’s 20% reduced costs per available seat mile in comparison to the A320-family aircraft, boosting Rouge’s competitiveness in leisure sectors. Rouge is also set to create a new crew base in Vancouver, focusing on growing its presence on the West Coast. The 737 MAX 8s will be modified to accommodate 177 seats, comprising 12 business class seats and 165 economy seats, complete with seat back televisions and complimentary fast Wi-Fi for Aeroplan members.

As Rouge shifts to the 737 MAX, Air Canada will decommission the ex-Rouge A319s and transform the A320s and A321s into mainline aircraft, upgrading them to reflect the latest cabin standards. Air Canada’s mainline narrow-body fleet will emphasize Airbus jets, including the A220-300s, A320s, A321s, and the forthcoming A321XLRs.
