This revelation has ignited a fierce dispute between Arkia, the Israeli airline, and TMM, the Tel Aviv-based catering firm in charge of loading the cart. Both sides are blaming one another, with the airline and the catering service threatening legal measures.

The incident became public when images of the baby rats inside the service cart started circulating on the internet. Although it’s not uncommon for animals to inadvertently make their way onto aircraft, the fact that the rats were confined within a service cart indicates that they were placed there by someone rather than having entered on their own accord.

Arkia has asserted that the cart came from TMM’s dry-goods storage area and did not include any food for passengers. The airline indicated that the cart was quickly taken out of service upon the discovery and stressed that there was no contact between the cart and the food served on the flight. Arkia has requested a comprehensive investigation from TMM to avert similar incidents in the future.

Conversely, TMM has disputed Arkia’s assertions, claiming that the cart was examined and cleared before the flight’s departure and contained only soft drinks. TMM argues that it is the airline’s obligation to inspect the cart prior to use and has urged Arkia to initiate an immediate inquiry into how the incident transpired. The catering company has also warned of potential legal action if their facility’s reputation is undermined.

The heart of the matter revolves around identifying which party is at fault for the lapse. While it appears reasonable to believe that the rats were in the cart at the time it was loaded onto the plane, the catering company argues that both an Arkia staff member and a TMM representative checked the cart before it left. This raises concerns regarding whether the Arkia crew adhered to the standard inspection procedures.

The situation is still unresolved, with both Arkia and TMM remaining steadfast in their stances. The incident has underscored the necessity of rigorous checks and accountability in airline catering services to prevent such events from recurring in the future.
