Ventura County, California, situated just 50 miles north of Los Angeles, is an undiscovered treasure for beach aficionados, adventurers, and history enthusiasts alike. Having grown up just south of this locale, I possess countless cherished memories of this coastal haven. From school reports about Mission San Buenaventura to strawberry harvesting in Oxnard, commemorating birthdays on Ventura Beach, shopping for prom outfits at Camarillo Outlets, and participating in summer camps on the Channel Islands, Ventura County has always been close to my heart. Recently, I chose to return to this cherished area to see what new experiences were in store.

This visit, we turned our attention to the coastal towns of Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Port Hueneme, in addition to the breathtaking Channel Islands National Park. Over a span of nine days, we journeyed and sailed between these locations, unveiling the finest experiences Ventura County has to present. From tackling impressive waves on a surfboard to spotting whales in the “Galapagos of the North” and enjoying a spectacular flight that left us awestruck, our trip was filled with unforgettable experiences.

### **Activities to Enjoy in Ventura**

Ventura, the town after which the county is named, is a delightful fusion of history, culture, and natural splendor. With origins as an 18th-century Spanish Mission settlement, Ventura boasts nearly 250 years of rich heritage. Nevertheless, its rugged setting at the base of the Los Padres National Forest and the Pacific Ocean kept it concealed from tourists for much of the 20th century. Even today, despite its popularity as a beach spot, Ventura has preserved its laid-back atmosphere.

#### **2. Explore Main Street Ventura**
Ventura’s Main Street has evolved into a pedestrian-only area, turning it into a wonderful place to walk, shop, and dine. Be sure to visit Iron & Resin Garage for fashionable apparel, The Refill Shoppe for sustainable products, and Latitudes Art Gallery for local artwork and gifts.

#### **3. Discover the Ventura Botanical Gardens**
Nestled in the hills above City Hall, the Ventura Botanical Gardens cover 107 acres and host over 100,000 plants. These gardens display fire-adapted, drought-resistant species from Mediterranean regions across the globe. With hiking paths, coastal vistas, and a strong sense of community, this spot is a must for nature lovers.

#### **4. Surf at Mondos Beach**
Ventura is a surfer’s dream, and Mondos Beach is an ideal spot for both novices and experienced surfers. We took lessons with the Mary Osborne Surf Academy and had a remarkable experience catching waves. Even if surfing isn’t your thing, Mondos Beach is a lovely location to unwind and watch the excitement.
