Delta flight redirected over racial slurs, threats of violence
This event occurred on Saturday, March 14, 2026, involving Delta flight DL69, which was scheduled to travel from Seattle (SEA) to Taipei (TPE) but ultimately diverted to Anchorage (ANC). The flight was conducted using an Airbus A350-900 with the registration N512DN.
The aircraft departed just after 5PM local time, on schedule, ascending to 36,000 feet, beginning its northwest journey. Everything proceeded normally for the initial couple of hours until after the first meal service, when events took a turn, leading to a volatile argument between a passenger and a flight attendant.
According to the affidavit submitted by the FBI in Alaska, here’s a summary of what occurred:
During the dispute, [passenger] expressed racial slurs, to which [flight attendant] replied with provocative comments. Furthermore, during the altercation, [passenger] threatened to confront and kick [flight attendant]’s “a**” upon landing. Ultimately, [passenger] attempted to “swing” at the flight attendant. However, no physical contact was made during the exchange. [passenger] had consumed several alcoholic beverages during the flight and was characterized by fellow passengers as an “a******” before boarding.
Based on witness interviews, it was disclosed that the flight attendant, described as an older black male about six feet tall and fit, had the following account:
[flight attendant] was in the galley eating when [passenger] abruptly grabbed his shoulder to get [flight attendant]’s attention. Upon turning, [flight attendant] saw [passenger] who rudely inquired if the bathroom was free. There was a restroom close to the galley. [flight attendant] replied dismissively, clarifying to [passenger] that a locked indicator on the door signified the restroom was occupied.
[flight attendant] then turned back to resume his meal. [passenger] made further disrespectful remarks. The restroom eventually became available, and [passenger] entered. After several minutes, [passenger] emerged and again directed disrespectful comments at [flight attendant]. [flight attendant] disapproved of [passenger]’s tone and retorted similarly.
A fierce verbal argument broke out, during which [passenger] called [flight attendant] a “n*****,” claimed [flight attendant] treated [passenger] that way solely due to [passenger]’s race, and threatened to kick [flight attendant]’s “ass” following the landing.
The situation reportedly escalated to such an extent that numerous passengers moved to the galley in attempts to calm the confrontation. Additionally, the commotion was assessed as a level three threat, prompting the retrieval of restraints (though they were never utilized), and access
