Delta Unveils Upcoming Delta One Lounge Launch at Atlanta Airport in 2029
In early 2025, Delta Air Lines officially announced that it would introduce its premium international lounge concept at its largest hub, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. At that point, the specifics were scarce. Now, there’s a significant development, as a deal has been finalized with the city for the lounge’s construction — it will cover approximately 39,000 square feet, with an anticipated opening in 2029, possibly (kudos to Jeremy for highlighting this).

Delta One Lounge ATL size, location, opening date

Delta is expanding its network of Delta One Lounges, primarily catering to passengers flying business class (Delta One) on long-distance routes. To date, these lounges have been established in New York (JFK), Los Angeles (LAX), Boston (BOS), and Seattle (SEA).

We have known a Delta One Lounge is on the way to Atlanta (ATL), though details remained unclear until recently. Thanks to a new submission to the Atlanta city council’s transportation committee, we now have clearer expectations:

– The Delta One Lounge Atlanta will be situated in Concourse E, one of the airport’s two main international terminals, alongside Concourse F.
– More specifically, the Delta One Lounge Atlanta will occupy the northeast quadrant of the concourse’s center, positioned between gates E14 and E27; thus, the lounge won’t replace a current Sky Club but will be a newly constructed facility.
– The Delta One Lounge Atlanta will be approximately 39,000 square feet, making it sizable, just slightly smaller than the one in New York.
– The construction of the Delta One Lounge Atlanta is expected to take about 30 months from its commencement, so in an ideal scenario, anticipate the lounge opening in 2029.
– The city is providing Delta with reimbursement up to $63 million for the lounge’s construction, considering the airline is developing the space from a “shell.”

What about Delta One Lounges at other major hubs of the carrier, such as Detroit (DTW), Minneapolis (MSP), and Salt Lake City (SLC)? It’s something the airline is currently addressing, although no official timeline has been communicated.

Airlines typically pursue these developments whenever feasible, but it is evident that securing real estate at airports can be challenging. Launching a new lounge often necessitates the renovation or repurposing of an existing space or an expansion of a terminal that creates additional space.

I’m pleased to see this development, but the timeline is tough.

It’s encouraging to witness Delta upgrading its lounge offerings, and the quality of the Delta One Lounges currently in operation is exceptional. However, quality lounges are only valuable if they are actually accessible, so Delta’s existing lounge presence leaves much to be desired.

Delta successfully launched Delta One Lounges at four hubs fairly swiftly, but now we face a significant gap. The prospect of waiting approximately three more years for the Delta One Lounge to debut at the carrier’s fortress hub certainly raises some concerns regarding the ground experience.

It’s essential to remember that Atlanta serves as a fortress hub, and airlines often exert less effort on passenger experience when they hold a dominant position at an airport. It’s no surprise that the initial four Delta One Lounges were established at highly competitive airports.

Bottom line

Delta is in the process of establishing a Delta One Lounge in Atlanta, located in Concourse E. Regrettably, we will need to exercise patience, as construction has yet to begin, and once it does, it is estimated to last around 30 months, placing us at 2029, barring any further delays.

The lounge will be just shy of 40,000 square feet, making it the second-largest Delta One Lounge in the network, just a tad smaller than the one in New York.

What are your thoughts on the plans for a Delta One Lounge in Atlanta?
