Discovering Medjumbe Island in Mozambique

Discovering Medjumbe Island in Mozambique

If you’ve envisioned the ideal desert island, the type that seems to exist solely in digitally altered screen-savers, it is real, and it’s called Medjumbe Island, Mozambique. Rani Resorts has claimed this winding sandbar floating above the turquoise waters of Mozambique’s Quirimbas Archipelago and transformed this private island into a 13-chalet paradise for honeymooners.

Welcome Drinks
Upon our arrival, we were welcomed with drinks in the heart of the hotel. This thatched-roof bar and lounge consistently offers breathtaking views, a refreshing breeze, and delightful cocktails.

Medjumbe Decor
Drawing inspiration from the island’s history and its location along the spice route, the décor at Medjumbe showcases a blend of Arab, African, and Portuguese influences. Vintage lanterns, rustic wooden furniture, African ceramics, and sea-glass hued cushions all contribute to an alluring coastal atmosphere.

Private Chalets
Following our delicious cocktails and a tour of the resort and its water sports amenities, we were shown to our private beachfront chalet. Awakening each morning to the sounds of the ocean and watching the sunset from our own private piece of beach was truly enchanting.

Ocean Views
Whether lounging in bed, snuggling on the loveseat, enjoying the jacuzzi tub, or showering outdoors, ocean views were always visible. Then, stepping outside the glass doors onto the wraparound terrace, the sand was right beneath our feet.

Private Pool Time
As if having the ocean directly in front of our room wasn’t sufficient, each suite featured an expansive sundeck complete with a plunge pool for an evening swim or private sunbathing.

Mozambique Feast
With views as captivating as these during each meal, the chef could have served us anything, and we probably wouldn’t have noticed. Instead, Medjumbe provided some of the finest meals we experienced throughout our 100-day honeymoon in Africa. Lobster and mango salads, coconut seafood paella, peppered Trinhado steak—the variety of flavors and abundance of choices were always astonishing.

Special Guests at Dinner
The food was so delectable that the island’s bird life occasionally decided to join us at meals. The charming and small Lesser Masked Weavers would courteously perch around the dining room. If you weren’t aware, you might think they were merely part of the decor.

Medjumbe Activities
More than just a visual delight, Medjumbe is packed with activities. From scuba diving and kayaking to beachcombing.

Note: Medjumbe Island Mozambique hosted us as their guests; however, all opinions are our own.
