Etihad Increases China Flight Routes from One to Six
Etihad Airways has initiated a major enhancement in its flight services to China, raising its weekly flights from 28 to 35. This development features the introduction of five new routes from Abu Dhabi to China, supplementing the current daily flights to Beijing. The new routes will offer daily flights to Shanghai beginning October 1, 2026, along with additional services to Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chengdu, and Shenzhen starting in March 2027. These new routes will utilize Boeing 787-9 aircraft, equipped with both business and economy class seating.

This calculated initiative highlights the increasing significance of the UAE-China corridor, improving connectivity for commerce, tourism, and investment. The expansion forms part of Etihad’s partnership with China Eastern, which already provides flights from Shanghai, Kunming, and Xi’an to the UAE. Etihad’s CEO, Antonoaldo Neves, stresses the strategic importance of China for the airline, viewing this expansion as a dedication to the market and an enhancement of Abu Dhabi’s position as a worldwide hub.

The growth is supported by recent bilateral air rights pacts between the UAE and China, which enable greater capacity. Despite a decline in international demand for Chinese routes, Etihad seeks to capitalize on this chance to fortify its standing against Gulf competitors Emirates and Qatar Airways. Nonetheless, this expansion in China could affect Etihad’s capacity to broaden services in other regions.

In summary, Etihad’s bold expansion strategy in China illustrates its long-term strategic ambitions, yet it remains to be determined how the airline will manage possible challenges related to demand and geopolitical influences.
