Finnair has revealed a major aircraft acquisition aimed at upgrading the fleet of its regional affiliate, Norra. The airline has made an order for as many as 46 Embraer E195-E2 jets, consisting of 18 confirmed orders, 16 options, and 12 purchase rights. The first delivery is anticipated in the third quarter of 2027, with additional deliveries scheduled through 2029.
The Embraer E195-E2 represents the most recent generation of jets from the Brazilian manufacturer, recognized for its fuel efficiency and passenger-centric design. It can accommodate between 120-146 passengers and has a range of up to 2,600 nautical miles. Finnair intends to configure these jets with 134 seats, featuring a 2-2 layout that excludes middle seats, USB charging outlets, and high-speed internet.
Finnair CEO Turkka Kuusisto underscored the advantages of the new aircraft, stressing enhancements in customer experience, reliability, and a reduction in CO₂ emissions. The E195-E2s will operate under the Norra name, which currently utilizes 12 ATR 72-500s and 12 Embraer E190s. The new jets provide over 30% improved fuel efficiency per passenger compared to the E190s.
This order signifies a strategic initiative for Finnair, bolstering its regional network and supporting its long-haul services. The acquisition is in line with recent developments in Northern Europe, as Scandinavian Airlines has also made an order for the E195-E2. Although the E-jets encounter challenges in the US market due to airline structures, they are gaining popularity in Europe. Finnair’s modernization strategy indicates growth and a dedication to sustainability in regional aviation.
