How to Effectively Pack Apparel for Travel and Optimize Carry-On Space

Yesterday, I released the introductory part of my upcoming travel report series. In the comments, reader JB inquired about the number of clothing items I usually pack for a week-long trip—do I bring enough for each day, do I do laundry, or something different?

Somehow, I’ve never addressed this topic, so now seems like a perfect moment!

My packing philosophy for trips

Before detailing my method, it’s worth mentioning a few disclaimers. First, while I see myself as somewhat of an airline and hotel connoisseur, and I’ve logged considerable travel time (I even resided in hotels full-time for a few years!), I’m quite disorganized when it comes to packing, and my advice may not be the best.

I’m the person who begins packing merely 20 minutes before heading to the airport, hastily tossing items into my bag. This contrasts sharply with Ford, who starts the packing process a day ahead, meticulously selects his outfits, and folds his garments neatly. Therefore, while I’ll explain my method, I’m actively advising against taking my tips too seriously.

In any case, my overarching philosophy on packing hinges on a few beliefs I hold:

– I often believe that people tend to overpack when it comes to dressy outfits and special occasions while underpacking for the essentials; this applies if you’re not heavily invested in taking selfies or curating outfits for photos

– While having extra clothing may feel like a “security blanket,” you will usually find that taking less leads to greater satisfaction, since travelers almost always pick up something during their journeys, leaving little room in their bags

– I’m actually not as averse to checking bags on some trips, particularly when heading to sunny locations, where bringing your own sunscreen and similar items is advantageous

The clothing I generally travel with

If I’m solely traveling with a carry-on, how do I pack? Here’s my usual approach, applicable across various climates:

– My primary focus is on packing an ample supply of socks and underwear, as it’s lovely to have (at least) one fresh pair per day; some may deem this excessive, but I also like to exercise while traveling, which can lead to a bit of perspiration

– I typically opt for athleisure wear whenever suitable, so I pack almost as many t-shirts as the days I’ll be away; I minimize pants, usually bringing one pair of long athleisure pants and a couple of shorts

– For “nicer” clothing (for dining out, etc.), I usually pack at most two outfits, resulting in some repetition

– Regardless of the climate I’m visiting, I always include a hoodie; even if I’m not going to a cold place, airports and indoor areas can be chilly, and I believe it’s one of the most underrated travel essentials

– I typically restrict myself to two pairs of shoes—one for fitness or city strolls and a dressier pair for dining, etc.

– If I’m visiting warm resort areas, I’ll add a pair of swim trunks, whereas for colder weather, I try to bring one good, adaptable jacket or sweater

Final thoughts

Everyone has their own unique strategy for packing for travel. Personally, I lean towards the idea that less is more, and my aim is to carry as many pairs of socks, underwear, and t-shirts as I can. I limit other items simply because it’s essential to set some boundaries.
