IndiGo’s CEO Pieter Elbers has stepped down from his role at the airline, effective immediately, citing “personal reasons.” Below is the letter he released, addressed to Rahul Bhatia, the Managing Director of the company:
Dear Mr. Bhatia,
Following our discussion, I hereby tender my resignation from the role of CEO of IndiGo, effective today, for personal reasons. I kindly ask that the notice period be waived.
It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve as CEO of IndiGo for the past years, since September 2022, and to be a part of the remarkable IndiGo family, its inspiring growth narrative, and the strides we have made together.
If the company requires, I am available for any handover or transition otherwise.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to you and IndiGo’s Board for the support provided to me.
For context, the 55-year-old Dutch national is a former CEO of KLM and took the helm at IndiGo in 2022. The timing of his appointment was particularly intriguing for management in Indian airlines, as around the same period, 55-year-old New Zealand national Campbell Wilson was named CEO of Air India.
IndiGo has experienced significant transformations under Elbers’ guidance.
What is the real narrative surrounding Pieter Elbers’ departure from IndiGo?
As you can see, officially Elbers maintains he is departing the airline for “personal reasons,” yet it is not difficult to discern the underlying situation. In early December 2025, the airline faced its most significant crisis in history, seemingly unprepared for the country’s new regulations regarding crew fatigue, which impacted pilot scheduling.
Elbers faced substantial blame for the incident and had to engage in quite the apology tour. More broadly, there appears to be some backlash in India regarding the fact that both of the nation’s largest airlines are led by foreign CEOs amidst ongoing leadership issues.
Therefore, I suspect Elbers may have been let go, or perhaps he just found the role increasingly unpleasant, making it not worth the compensation anymore (I believe the former scenario is far more likely). I anticipate that Elbers will be succeeded by an Indian national, but only time will reveal the outcome.
Elbers is a well-regarded industry figure (despite his tendency to clash with others), and I am eager to see what his next steps will be, especially considering he has now (most likely) been ousted from both KLM and IndiGo. During his tenure, IndiGo significantly expanded its long-haul ambitions and introduced a premium cabin. Only time will determine the success of those initiatives.
Bottom line
Pieter Elbers has resigned from his position as IndiGo CEO with immediate effect. The Dutch national has been with the airline since 2022, after his exit from KLM. While Elbers earned general respect, IndiGo’s late 2025 crisis upset many travelers (and regulators), so I am not surprised to find this likely costing him his role.
What are your thoughts on Elbers’ departure from IndiGo?
