In late 2025, Korean Air revealed intentions to implement complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi. While numerous airlines have pledged to adopt the service, few global carriers are as in need as Korean Air, considering the current conditions of the airline’s Wi-Fi. In that context, there’s exciting news, as the deployment will commence imminently and is projected to wrap up by the end of 2027.
Starlink is set to debut on Korean Air, Asiana, Jin Air, Air Busan, and Air Seoul
Korean Air, in collaboration with Asiana Airlines, Jin Air, Air Busan, and Air Seoul, plans to roll out free Starlink Wi-Fi across their full fleets. Although the announcement was made last year, there was a considerable delay before the first aircraft was equipped with the service.
This brings forth positive developments, as Korean Air will initiate Starlink service for the first time on September 15, 2026, with a target for all Korean Air and former Asiana aircraft to be equipped by the conclusion of 2027 (the Asiana brand will cease to exist after December 2026).
The service will initially launch on four wide-body aircraft — specifically, three Airbus A350-900s and one Boeing 777-300ER. These planes will fly medium and long-haul routes throughout the Americas, Europe, and Southeast Asia, in addition to key short-haul routes.
Starlink is recognized for delivering high-speed, low-latency broadband internet, and the service will be available from gate to gate. Starlink Wi-Fi will facilitate live streaming, productivity akin to what is experienced on the ground (boasting high upload and download speeds), gaming, e-commerce, and more. In my opinion, this will significantly enhance the passenger experience.
As is common with numerous airlines, voice and video calls will be limited to “preserve cabin comfort” (which I see as a positive). The airline highlights that it will be the first carrier in East Asia to implement Starlink.

Starlink Wi-Fi will roll out across Korean Air’s entire fleet
This is immensely positive news for Korean Air travelers
South Korea stands as one of the most technologically advanced nations globally, yet until 2023, Korean Air offered no inflight Wi-Fi on any aircraft. In recent years, we have observed the gradual introduction of this service on select planes, but it still remains available on only a minor fraction of the fleet.
Thus, the transition from having no Wi-Fi to adopting Starlink Wi-Fi signifies a remarkable improvement for Korean Air. When Emirates announced its plans to implement Starlink Wi-Fi just weeks prior to Korean Air, I remarked that it was the most encouraging Starlink update from a major international airline to date, transitioning from the painfully sluggish OnAir system to Starlink. Nevertheless, Korean Air surpasses Emirates, as the airline offers no Wi-Fi whatsoever on the vast majority of its planes.
For those wondering why Korean Air postponed the introduction of Wi-Fi until a few years ago, there’s an intriguing rationale. Back in 2016, the Senior Innovation Technology Officer at Korean Air was questioned about changing content and entertainment expectations for passengers during travel, and here’s how that was addressed:
“I believe that passengers have similar expectations for in-flight and on-ground content and connectivity options. For example, in Korea, the wireless infrastructure is so advanced (significantly faster than the US average) that in-flight Internet services based on existing commercial satellite technology would be disappointing to them. That is a primary reason why Korean Air has not implemented in-flight Internet.”
Essentially, the explanation was that Korean Air refrained from offering inflight Wi-Fi because the speeds would have been too disappointing for Koreans, who are accustomed to leading-edge technology. Fortunately, with Starlink, that concern is now resolved.
