Marriott Unveils In-App Digital Gratuity Option: Convenience or Burden?

Marriott is rolling out a new digital tipping function within its mobile application, igniting discussions among users. This enhancement enables guests to tip hotel staff directly via the app, a capability that is already operational at around 1,500 locations across the United States and Canada. This initiative is managed by a third-party provider, resulting in tips not being reflected on the guest’s folio, nor do they accumulate Bonvoy bonus points.

The mechanics of the feature bring up concerns, such as whether guests can offer tips to individual staff members or if the tips are generalized for the entire team. There are apprehensions regarding the potential increase in pressure on guests to provide tips for services that have not traditionally required them, as employers may pass labor expenses onto patrons.

Despite this, the feature is regarded as a method to modernize tipping customs, aligning with current practices like QR codes or envelopes used for housekeeping gratuities. Additionally, it tackles the issue of cash tipping’s inconvenience, considering the frequent absence of change at hotels.

Though the feature has the potential to simplify tipping for those who choose to participate, it also establishes a precedent that could encourage more staff to request tips. The success and acceptance of this feature will likely hinge on its implementation and the experiences of users.
