Philippine Airlines Set to Introduce New Manila-Chicago Route by Mid-2026
Philippine Airlines has revealed intentions to broaden its services to the United States by initiating flights to a new gateway, Chicago, commencing in the summer of 2026. The airline has submitted a request to the Department of Transportation (DOT) to provide a regularly scheduled service between Manila (MNL) and Chicago (ORD). This ultra long haul flight, spanning 8,132 miles, is expected to be among the longest globally.

The airline is requesting swift approval to begin this service during the summer 2026 IATA traffic season, which runs from late March to late October, aiming to put tickets on sale at the earliest opportunity. The service corresponds with the air service agreement between the Philippines and the United States, which permits Philippine carriers to operate flights to various US destinations, including four additional points chosen by the Philippine government, with Chicago being one of them.

Presently, Philippine Airlines services numerous US destinations, such as Guam, Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York, Saipan, San Francisco, and Seattle. The inclusion of Chicago aligns with the airline’s route network enhancement, following its recent restructuring and fleet updates. After filing for bankruptcy protection in 2021 and downsizing its fleet, the airline ordered nine Airbus A350-1000s in 2023, aiding in the launch of new routes.

Chicago holds the seventh position for the size of the Filipino population among US cities, rendering it a sensible choice for expansion. The airline’s initiative to introduce Chicago flights complements its current US mainland destinations and is bolstered by the acquisition of new aircraft, paving the way for further development.

Philippine Airlines’ expansion to Chicago represents a strategic move to enhance its transpacific service options, addressing both the local Filipino community and travelers looking for competitive fares across the Pacific. The airline’s route launch plans illustrate its continued efforts to reinforce its presence in the US market.
