Philippine Airlines Unveils Exclusive Seating for Travelers with Nut Allergies

Nut allergies pose a significant challenge for numerous individuals, especially when flying, as they spend prolonged periods in confined spaces. Although various airlines take measures to assist these passengers, I have not encountered anything like this previously. I wonder if anyone is aware of the background behind this, or if it’s becoming more common, and I’m simply not acquainted with it…

In this post:

Philippine Airlines has specific seats designated for nut allergies

While casually examining seat maps for Philippine Airlines (as one does), I stumbled upon something that seems quite unique. The airline’s seat maps feature special seats highlighted in green, which are intended for travelers with nut allergies, according to the key.

For instance, on the Airbus A350-900, this encompasses a random center aisle seat in business class, an arbitrary aisle seat in premium economy, and a row of seats on the left at the rear of the forward economy section.

In contrast, on the Boeing 777-300ER, it includes the last two seats on the left in the back of business class, along with a row of seats on the left side in the center economy section.

What exactly makes these nut allergy seats distinct?

From what I gather, airlines frequently attempt to make basic adjustments for passengers with nut allergies, such as possibly informing other passengers of the allergy, permitting those with nut allergies to pre-board to clean their seat, and so on.

But what function do these seats fulfill for passengers with nut allergies? Theoretically, I could comprehend if the intent was to allocate seats as far from others as feasible, to reduce contact. However, in some instances, these are merely seats positioned in the middle of the cabin, and I can’t discern any logical reasoning behind the selection of these designated seats.

I reviewed Philippine Airlines’ information for passengers with nut allergies, yet there was no reference to these blocked seats being included in the airline’s nut allergy measures.

Bottom line

Philippine Airlines apparently allocates specific seats for passengers with nut allergies, which is something I don’t believe I’ve encountered before. Nonetheless, it is not entirely evident to me what role these seats play, and how they safeguard those with nut allergies.

Does anyone have any thoughts or insights on this?
