Proposed Legislation Aims to Ban Dual Citizenship in the United States: “Total Dedication Needed”

**Republican Senator Seeks to Abolish Dual Citizenship**

Bernie Moreno, a Republican Senator hailing from Ohio, has put forth the Exclusive Citizenship Act of 2025, which aims to assert that citizens of the United States must possess sole and complete allegiance to the United States. As Colombian-born Senator Moreno articulates:

> “One of the greatest honors of my life was when I became an American citizen at 18, the first opportunity I could do so. It was an honor to pledge an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America and ONLY to the United States of America! Being an American citizen is an honor and a privilege—and if you want to be an American, it’s all or nothing. It’s time to end dual citizenship for good.”

Current statutes permit United States citizens to retain foreign citizenship, yet this legislation would necessitate that they relinquish their dual citizenship. The rationale is that dual citizenship engenders conflicts of interest and split loyalty.

Should this bill be enacted, within a year of its passing, individuals with dual citizenship would need to renounce their foreign citizenship, or present a renunciation of their United States citizenship. Of course, this is merely a proposal, and it’s uncertain if it will materialize.

**My View on the United States Ending Dual Citizenship**

Personally, I’m against this modification, and that’s not solely because I possess dual citizenship. In fairness, the United States would not be the first nation to outlaw dual citizenship. However, the majority of countries that prohibit dual citizenship are located in Africa and Asia, with few nations in the Americas or Europe adopting such a policy.

Clearly, any “view” on this is going to be fundamentally political. Personally, I appreciate residing in the United States, and all the benefits the country provides (opportunity, free speech, etc.). That said, I’m not a nationalist who believes “my” country is infallible (which could apply to the United States, Germany, or any other nation with which I might hold citizenship).

I’ll admit I’m somewhat of an anti-war idealist in this respect. Another aspect I appreciate about living in the United States is our lack of a draft, allowing me to avoid military service, enabling me to simply enjoy life as a content American, rather than having a specific allegiance (and let me clearly state that I hold great respect for those who choose to serve).

However, I also fail to comprehend what this proposal intends to achieve, apart from showy patriotism? What’s all or nothing? What precisely is my singular oath of allegiance to the United States meant to transform?

I also question whether this wouldn’t run counter to the interests of the United States. The nation presently imposes global taxation on citizens, meaning dual citizens are still quite actively “contributing” to the United States as Americans. Perhaps mandating individuals to choose could lead more people to renounce their American citizenship.

**Final Thoughts**

A United States Senator has put forward a bill to prohibit dual citizenship. The argument posits that citizens must exhibit full allegiance to the United States, and if they are not prepared to give up their foreign citizenship, they should relinquish their US citizenship. We’ll see if anything arises from this, but it’s a rather drastic proposal…

**What are your thoughts on this proposal?**
