Qantas 787 Flight to Dallas Diverts to Tahiti After Passenger Bites Crew Member
A man attempting to travel from Australia to the United States now finds himself in a jail cell in Tahiti, facing a lifetime ban from Qantas, Australia’s premier airline. This event took place on May 15, 2026, during Qantas flight QF21 from Melbourne to Dallas, which was operated by a Boeing 787-9. The flight, expected to last 15 hours, was rerouted to Papeete, Tahiti, due to the man’s unruly conduct.

Approximately four hours post-departure, the passenger, apparently intoxicated, started creating a scene. He became involved in an altercation with a flight attendant, during which he allegedly bit a crew member. Parts of the incident were recorded on video, depicting the passenger behaving erratically and using offensive language.

The flight attendant tried to calm the situation with a combination of gentle requests and humor. Despite the diversion, the flight arrived in Dallas just three hours late. Upon arrival, the passenger was apprehended in Tahiti and added to Qantas’ permanent no-fly roster.

This occurrence underscores the difficulties airlines confront with unruly passengers, particularly those under the influence of drugs or alcohol. It emphasizes the need for effective behavior management on flights to maintain the safety and comfort of all passengers and crew members.
