Global Airlines: The Unique Journey of an Airline Startup
Within the domain of airline startups, Global Airlines distinguishes itself through its bold aspiration to bring back the “golden age” of travel by utilizing Airbus A380s. In spite of the lofty ambitions, the airline’s path has been laden with obstacles and unusual occurrences.
In the spring of 2025, Global Airlines successfully conducted two roundtrip flights from Europe to New York. These flights were conducted as part of a wet lease arrangement with Hi-Fly, a charter company based in Portugal, since Global Airlines lacks its own operating certificate. After these flights, the aircraft was put into long-term storage owing to the requirement for expensive maintenance, which has not yet been finalized.
Over the last 10 months, the airline has encountered multiple challenges. Particularly, two winding down petitions were submitted in the UK, although both were rejected. Such petitions are rare for healthy companies, prompting concerns regarding Global Airlines’ financial state.
Furthermore, Tom Stokley, co-founder of OnlyFans and an influential member of Global Airlines’ board, has left the company. His departure creates a void in leadership, especially since he was regarded as one of the more credible individuals connected to the airline.
Founder’s financial circumstances, James Asquith, have also been questioned. Previously listed among The Times’ 40 richest individuals under 40 with a net worth of £183 million, Asquith is now absent from the most recent list, indicating a substantial dip in his fortune.
Adding to these complications, Asquith’s other enterprise, Holiday Swap, a home rental service once appraised at £300 million, has been taken offline. Despite its claimed 10 million users and 1.7 million followers on Facebook, the platform’s disappearance has largely gone unnoticed, raising additional doubts about its true user numbers and worth.
While Asquith asserts that Global Airlines is set for future prosperity, the absence of recent updates and the challenges it faces cast uncertainty on the airline’s sustainability. The unfolding narrative of Global Airlines, with its combination of ambition and struggle, could indeed evolve into an intriguing story in the future.
