Apple’s AirTag stands out as one of the top, yet understated, innovations in travel technology from recent years. AirTags allow you to monitor your luggage, handbag, or backpack with an effortless setup and a forget-it-until-needed design. However, the issue with the compact white disc is that it’s not designed to accommodate what is likely your most cherished pocket-sized item – a wallet.
Enter Ridge, primarily a slim wallet producer, with the introduction of the Ridge Tracker Card, an AirTag specifically for your wallet.
Setup And Shape
The Tracker Card is just slightly thicker than a typical credit card, weighs about the same, and features a simple black finish complemented by some Ridge branding on the front. On the back, there is a minuscule “Find My by Apple” logo, making it a discreet tracker. A small pressure-sensitive button on the front is used for the initial setup, compatible with Apple devices on the Find My network.
Like An AirTag… But
The setup for the Tracker Card closely resembles that of an AirTag. You access the Find My app, add a new device, assign it a name and an optional emoji, and you’re all set. Now your Tracker Card appears on the Find My map. Similar to an AirTag, the Tracker Card utilizes any nearby Apple devices to signal its location and allow you to track it. This process is seamless, allowing you to essentially forget about the Tracker Card (until it requires wireless charging approximately every 5 months).
Worst Case Scenario
Automatically, Find My will notify you when your Tracker Card is no longer within your vicinity. (Naturally, one of your Apple devices must be nearby to alert you.) This feature is beneficial in cases of potential pickpocketing or if you leave your wallet in the hotel. The alerts inform you that something may be amiss, enabling you to access the Find My map to determine the location of your card.
Once you’re within 10 meters (30 feet), you can make your Tracker Card emit a beeping sound to assist in locating it. Unfortunately, due to the absence of ultra-wideband capability like that of an AirTag, you won’t have access to the precise location tracking arrow when in close proximity. This is a drawback of the Tracker Card’s slender design, but it remains the closest and most effective AirTag alternative for your wallet.
