Singapore Airlines has recently revised its business class seat assignment policy, a decision that has taken many by surprise given the airline’s esteemed service quality. Effective June 2, 2026, the airline has implemented limitations on seat selection contingent upon fare type and membership tier. In the past, all business class travelers could pre-select their seats, aside from specific bulkhead seats designated for elite members. Now, only those purchasing the highest fare categories, Flexi and Standard, or Access award fares, are permitted to select from all available seats. Travelers holding Business Lite fares or Saver and Advantage award fares will encounter restrictions, only able to select from a limited selection of seats. Nonetheless, PPS Club members still enjoy complete seat selection rights.
This policy will be enforced for all seat selections from June 2, irrespective of the ticket purchase date, although previously assigned seats will still be honored. Thankfully, 96 hours prior to departure, all seat restrictions are lifted, enabling passengers to choose from any remaining available seats.
The restrictions are rather comprehensive, with a notable portion of the cabin designated as unavailable for those with limited fare options. For example, on the Airbus A350-900ULR, nine out of 17 rows are inaccessible, and on the Airbus A380, 11 out of 17 rows cannot be selected in advance. This strategy prompts inquiries regarding whether the airline seeks to promote upgrades to higher fare classes or if this signifies a move towards monetizing seat selections.
Despite these alterations, travelers still have the option to choose any available seat within 96 hours of departure, maintaining some degree of flexibility. Although this policy change is atypical for Singapore Airlines, it does not currently impose extra fees for seat selection. The potential effects of these restrictions on passenger experiences and fare decisions are yet to be determined.
