Of the “big three” international airline alliances, the most esteemed alliance-wide status is oneworld Emerald. The oneworld alliance stands out as the sole one offering three elite tiers, and oneworld Emerald provides access to perks generally linked with first class. My favorite aspect of oneworld Emerald status is the access to oneworld first class lounges, even when traveling in economy. Certain lounges, like the Qatar Airways Al Safwa Lounge and British Airways Concorde Room, are not included, but many outstanding lounges are available, featuring some of my favorite first class experiences worldwide.
Cathay Pacific’s The Pier First Class Lounge in Hong Kong is an exceptional lounge. I marvel every time I’m there as a oneworld Emerald member, given how lovely the space is. I appreciate the design, the fantastic aircraft views, the a la carte restaurant, the bar serving excellent coffee and cocktails, private cabanas for relaxation, and complimentary massages. It’s worth noting that Cathay Pacific’s The Wing First Class Lounge has recently been completely refreshed, making it arguably nicer than The Pier. However, access to that lounge is currently restricted, excluding oneworld Emerald members participating in programs other than Cathay Pacific’s.
In addition to Cathay Pacific’s The Pier First Class Lounge, the Qantas First Lounge Sydney is another favorite of mine for oneworld Emerald members. The lounge boasts a beautiful design with impressive apron and runway views, delectable a la carte dining, barista-quality coffee, and even complimentary spa services. I could easily spend hours here without losing interest. The Qantas First Lounge Melbourne is also superb, but I’ll only highlight one of Qantas’ Australian lounges since they are quite alike, and the Sydney lounge has a slight advantage.
One area where Qantas excels is in its oneworld Emerald lounges. These are not limited to Australia; there are also a few located internationally. I particularly enjoy the Qantas First Lounge Singapore, which features stunning decor and gives off a vibe similar to an exclusive restaurant. The lounge serves wonderful food, showcasing Qantas favorites like salt & pepper squid, along with local delights such as laksa.
The Japan Airlines First Lounge Tokyo Haneda is another gem for oneworld Emerald members. This lounge is likely the largest first class lounge available to oneworld Emeralds, offering numerous distinct areas, from a bar with Japanese specialty beverages to a sushi restaurant and much more. Come hungry to this lounge to indulge in offerings like sushi and beef curry with rice.
In the United States, we often encounter airport lounges serving cubed cheese and boxed wine. In that regard, the Qantas First Lounge Los Angeles is a refreshing change, as it ranks among the best airport lounges in the U.S., in my view. Like other Qantas First Lounge locations, this one emphasizes dining, providing a restaurant-quality selection of food and beverages. What a delight to enjoy this before an American Airlines flight!
While Finnair might not feature a first class product, it offers the Finnair Platinum Wing specifically for oneworld Emerald members. This lounge must be among the coziest out there, as it has plenty of comfortable seating, a la carte dining, superb coffee, and even a sauna, which is quite a unique amenity for an airport lounge! There’s nothing quite like unwinding in a sauna with fellow oneworld Emeralds, right?
While nothing can rival Cathay Pacific’s lounge offerings in Hong Kong, the airline also has a fantastic first class lounge at London Heathrow Terminal 3. This lounge features comfortable seating and a la carte dining, along with an impressive array of food and drink options. If you’re traveling American out of London and hold oneworld Emerald status, this lounge is far superior to the American International First Lounge.
American and British Airways both operate from Terminal 8 at New York JFK, sharing three lounges — the Chelsea Lounge, the Soho Lounge, and the Greenwich Lounge. Primarily intended for oneworld Emerald members, the Soho Lounge is quite pleasant, offering apron views, comfortable seating, an extensive buffet, and a limited menu of a la carte dining choices.
Although Malaysia Airlines has phased out first class, the airline does offer an exclusive lounge for oneworld Emerald members. To be frank, it’s not my favorite lounge globally, but it is nice to have a quieter space compared to the main lounge. The lounge provides ample private seating, and its main differentiation is the a la carte dining.
In summary: I cherish having oneworld Emerald status.
