Lufthansa has revealed an exhilarating expansion of its transatlantic routes, adding a new destination in the United States. The airline is set to commence a fresh route from Munich (MUC) to Phoenix (PHX) beginning August 3, 2027. This signifies Lufthansa’s inaugural direct service to Arizona, with flights planned three times a week on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. The 5,823-mile journey will be conducted by an Airbus A350-900, although it is anticipated to be one of the older variants lacking the latest Allegris cabins.
This announcement follows the airline’s recent introduction of a new route to Columbus, Ohio, and reflects Lufthansa’s strategy to enhance its footprint in the U.S. market. The choice to initiate the Phoenix route after summer coincides with travel trends, taking into account Phoenix’s warm summer weather.
Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is a significant hub for American Airlines and has experienced substantial growth in its long-haul services. The airport currently provides nonstop flights to London operated by American and British Airways, and recently welcomed Air France’s service from Paris. The launch of Lufthansa’s service introduces a Star Alliance option for travelers, complementing existing routes and improving connectivity.
Previously, the German leisure airline Condor operated flights between Germany and Phoenix, but these were ceased in 2025. The new Lufthansa route addresses this void and presents a direct link to Europe. Furthermore, Phoenix has broadened its international scope with new routes to Asia, including flights from Taipei by China Airlines and Starlux Airlines.
In summary, Lufthansa’s new Munich to Phoenix route is a noteworthy enhancement to Phoenix’s international offerings, providing additional options for travelers and bolstering the airport’s role as an expanding hub for transatlantic and global travel.
