Alaska Airlines has revealed a range of improvements aimed at enhancing passenger experiences, particularly in the premium sector. A notable change pertains to Hawaiian Airlines’ Airbus A330 fleet, which is set to undergo a thorough cabin renovation beginning in 2028. The 24 A330-200s, with an average age of 13 years, will experience a complete interior transformation. Major enhancements include:
1. Substitution of the existing 2-2-2 fully flat business class seats with Leihōkū Suites, which will feature a 1-2-1 configuration allowing direct aisle access, privacy doors, 19″ 4K entertainment displays, Bluetooth connectivity, USB-C, and AC charging.
2. Launch of a premium economy section, dubbed Premium Reserve, consisting of 28 seats arranged in a 2-3-2 format.
3. Technological upgrades like high-definition seat-back screens and Bluetooth audio, complementing the current Starlink Wi-Fi.
4. New furnishings, carpets, and illumination in the economy class.
These modifications are set to raise the share of premium seating from 30% to 40%. The upgrades are intended to boost Hawaiian Airlines’ competitive edge, especially in global markets. Nonetheless, the long-term plans for the A330 fleet are still unclear, given that Alaska Air Group is transitioning its long-haul routes from Honolulu to Seattle. The incorporation of Hawaiian’s geographical reach into Alaska Air Group’s network may enhance profitability, even amidst recent route cutbacks.
