**Marriott Bonvoy Pledges to Notify About Devaluations**
The Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program has recently revised its terms and conditions, particularly adding a provision for members holding Chinese citizenship living in mainland China. This revision includes a pledge to provide advance notification of any alterations that may adversely affect members’ fundamental rights and interests. While this action is a step forward for transparency, it seems that this assurance is presently confined to members in China, likely due to local consumer protection regulations.
Marriott’s updated terms indicate that if modifications to the loyalty program are expected to have a significant negative effect, the company will issue prior notification in a proper manner. However, the exact definition of what qualifies as a “significant negative effect” or the duration of advance notice remains unclear. This uncertainty raises concerns about the real-world consequences of this policy change, especially considering that Marriott’s variable award pricing, a frequent source of devaluation, is not included in this notification requirement.
While it is promising to observe Marriott moving towards enhanced transparency, the ambiguity and the restricted reach of this pledge might undermine its effectiveness. It is yet to be determined whether this amendment will foster greater transparency for all Marriott Bonvoy members.
