In October 2023, Qatar Airways unveiled a thrilling advancement in inflight connectivity by teaming up with SpaceX to launch Starlink Wi-Fi on its flights. By October 2024, the inaugural aircraft featuring this cutting-edge service took to the skies, marking a notable achievement in the airline’s technological progress.
Qatar Airways is now providing complimentary high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi, offering passengers up to 500 megabits per second for activities such as gaming, VPN accessibility, and streaming sports. This service is offered at no cost with one-click access, positioning Qatar Airways as one of the largest airlines to partner with SpaceX in inflight connectivity. Other airlines collaborating with Starlink include airBaltic, Air France, Air New Zealand, Alaska Airlines, British Airways, Emirates, Hawaiian Airlines, Iberia, Korean Air, SAS, United, Virgin Atlantic, and WestJet.
The deployment of Starlink Wi-Fi has made substantial headway, with Qatar Airways finishing installations on its Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 fleets, exceeding a total of 60 aircraft. The airline is now concentrating on its Boeing 787s, with three planes already fitted with the service. The installation procedure lasts about 10 hours per aircraft, highlighting the airline’s dedication to improving passenger experience.
Previously, Qatar Airways’ fleet included Inmarsat’s GX aviation technology, referred to as “Super Wi-Fi,” generally priced at $10 per flight with no data limitations. Some aircraft also had OnAir Wi-Fi, which functioned at slower speeds. The launch of Starlink Wi-Fi signifies a major enhancement, delivering faster and complimentary connectivity.
The airline’s Starlink Wi-Fi deployment is advancing swiftly, with 60% of its wide-body fleet now outfitted. The installation on the 787s is particularly notable due to the aircraft’s composite fuselage, which poses distinct challenges. Qatar Airways’ achievements in this domain may motivate other airlines to adopt similar measures.
While the current emphasis is on the 787s, it remains uncertain if other aircraft types, like the A330 and A380, will receive Starlink installations. The A330s, specifically, may not be upgraded due to their forthcoming retirement.
In conclusion, Qatar Airways is making remarkable progress in providing complimentary Starlink Wi-Fi throughout its fleet, offering a competitive advantage in inflight connectivity. With installations finalized on the 777s and A350s, and ongoing work on the 787s, the airline is making significant strides to enhance the passenger experience with high-speed, free internet access.
