The Conclusion of Lufthansa First Class Rewards with Partner Miles
**Lufthansa First Class Awards Have Been Blocked for Weeks**

Over the years, it has become progressively challenging to redeem partner airline miles for travel in Lufthansa first class. Undoubtedly, this has been a gradual and consistent trend over the last 15+ years, dating back to when Lufthansa featured 16 first class seats on the upper deck of its Boeing 747-400s (time flies!).

Nevertheless, until recently, Lufthansa first class persisted as one of the premier mileage values for those wishing to travel in first class across the Atlantic, due to the limited options, in those scenarios where the airline released availability.

While Lufthansa’s own Miles & More members can book first class awards as soon as the schedule is released (subject to capacity restrictions), Lufthansa has long imposed significant limitations for those booking first class through partner frequent flyer programs.

Historically, when it came to redeeming partner miles for Lufthansa first class, it has been feasible to redeem miles for first class up to 15 days prior to departure. In early 2024, that window was reduced considerably, and since then, Lufthansa appeared to open first class awards to partner programs within three days of departure, at most. As you can see, that creates a narrow timeframe during which you can redeem for Lufthansa first class.

For what it’s worth, seats.aero is an excellent tool for searching award availability, featuring a Lufthansa first class award tracker. Such tools are fantastic for simplifying the process of finding award space. Simultaneously, the convenience with which space can be searched is likely one of the reasons we’ve increasingly witnessed airlines impose restrictions on various types of award tickets.

Anyway, this brings us to the current situation — since June 1, 2026, Lufthansa has entirely ceased releasing first class award availability to partner programs. It matters not which route you’re taking, or if you’re ending in Germany or connecting. The same narrative applies across the board.

To be fair, we’ve encountered some irregularities with Lufthansa award availability in the past, so it’s plausible that this is one of those instances. However, this outage has persisted longer than any prior disruptions, and I find it noteworthy that this coincides with the transition in calendar months, which seems intentional.

What might explain this recent trend? I perceive a few probable explanations:

– Lufthansa has altered its policy and will no longer provide first class award seats to partner programs; this would indeed be the most significant change.

– Lufthansa is temporarily limiting award availability; this could be due to the peak summer season, or perhaps Lufthansa anticipates another employee strike soon, preferring to avoid having even more premium passengers to rebook.

– It may simply be some sort of glitch that will resolve soon.

I’ve reached out to contacts for a statement on this, but they have had nothing to communicate. Thus, while I cannot assert with certainty that this is a permanent change, it appears highly likely to me that it is.

**What Does the Future Hold for Lufthansa First Class Awards?**

In terms of redeeming miles for Lufthansa first class, I must assume that our best days are behind us:

The fact that the new soft product was launched across the fleet in May, and then the change was enacted as of June, certainly makes this all feel quite intentional.

The overall industry trend we’ve witnessed is evident, as I discussed some time ago. Airlines are increasingly restricting award space to partner programs, aiming to monetize their own programs.

Therefore, I wouldn’t be astonished if Lufthansa ultimately eliminates partner first class awards completely. The more plausible direction this heads is that we see Miles & More increasingly added as a partner for international transferable points currencies, thereby allowing Lufthansa greater control over its award space.

Clearly, this hobby is quite different from its previous state, but it’s not all negative — there are also numerous incredible opportunities that didn’t exist years ago.

**Bottom Line**

Since June 1, 2026, Lufthansa has not made any first class award seats available to partner frequent flyer programs. There’s no denying that redeeming for Lufthansa first class has become significantly more challenging over the years, but completely blocking space is undeniably the most extreme action.

While we’ve witnessed some temporary blocks in the past, we’ve never seen them last this long. Additionally, the timing here seems quite intentional, amidst the widespread rollout of the new Allegris first class product, along with the new soft product being made available across the fleet.
